A new study reveals a surprising culprit: fructose, a common sugar found in our kitchens. This research, published in Nature Aging, uncovers how fructose, released by chemotherapy-induced senescent cells, acts as a signal that encourages cancer cells to spread. The study, conducted on ovarian cancers treated with cisplatin, found that fructose, a small molecule, triggers a metabolic cascade that reduces cholesterol production, making cancer cells less adhesive and more likely to detach from neighboring cells. This detachment is a critical step in the spread of ovarian cancer. The research team observed this effect in both cell cultures and mice, with the latter showing more widespread metastatic disease when fed a high-fructose diet. Disabling the cancer cells' ability to metabolize fructose reduced their movement, suggesting that dietary fructose may influence cancer progression. While these findings are preclinical, they raise important questions about the role of diet in cancer treatment and the potential benefits of restricting fructose intake to improve treatment response.
