Sharib's decision to quit his job at MTV in the early 2000s was not made lightly. With a monthly salary of Rs 25,000, he was leaving a stable career behind to pursue a risky path in acting. This was a time when many would have been hesitant to take such a leap of faith, but Sharib's unwavering belief in his talent and the support of his wife, Nasreen, gave him the courage to take the plunge. In his own words, 'It was a very difficult decision. If she'd (his wife) said no, I'd have continued to lead my life like that, where there'd be nothing else besides work.'
The Struggle Continues
The challenges didn't end with Sharib's decision to quit his job. The couple's savings began to dwindle, and they were forced to make difficult choices. Nasreen sold her jewellery bit by bit, and they had to sell their house. The couple's determination to support Sharib's dream was unwavering, but the financial strain took its toll. 'I sold my jewellery bit by bit. We couldn't continue with our house either and had to sell it. Then I had to sell the house from my inheritance. Every time we got excited by an opportunity, an obstacle would crop up,' Nasreen recalled.
'Zero Money' Moment
There was a point when the couple's financial situation became dire, to the point where they had 'zero money' and not even enough to last them another day. Sharib found himself sitting outside a mall, contemplating who to call in this crisis. It was at this low point that luck intervened, and he received a call from his MTV friend Vaibhav Modi, offering him a new game show to write for NDTV Imagine's Zor Ka Jhatka, hosted by none other than Shah Rukh Khan in 2011.
The Turning Point
This moment marked a turning point in Sharib's journey. Despite the struggles, he continued to persevere, and his hard work eventually paid off. The next year, he was working with Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Chopra's romantic drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan and also bagged Nutin Kakkar's Filmistaan. Blaming the Wife
There was a time when the bad times stretched for so long that Sharib Hashmi ended up blaming his wife. Nasreen recalled, 'There was a moment when he was very disappointed. And he started telling me, 'Why did you allow me to quit my job? If you'd stopped me, then this crisis wouldn't have happened.' At that time, I was shaken. How can you say such a thing? It's your dream, but we've supported you as a family. There should be no regrets. Don't say such a thing again.'
The Family Man
Just when they were close to giving up, Sharib Hashmi asked for another two years, and then The Family Man happened. Since then, Sharib has been part of acclaimed projects such as Pagglait (2021), Tarla (2023), Fighter (2024), The Diplomat (2025), and shows like Asur and Scam 1992 with two more seasons of The Family Man.
