This project, aptly named the Bower Street Apartment, is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and its ability to evoke emotions and create a lasting connection with its surroundings.
A Coastal Haven
The apartment's journey begins along a scenic coastal path, leading to the iconic Fairy Bower Rockpool. It's here, amidst the sea-sprayed atmosphere, that CRD set out to create a space that embodies the essence of coastal living, yet transcends typical beach house clichés.
Beyond the Blue
"We aimed for warmth and deep relaxation," says Christine Rose Collins, the director of CRD. "The challenge was to capture the coastal setting without relying on the expected white and blue palette."
The design team drew inspiration from the unique characteristics of Manly, including its 'golden light', weathered sandstone, and lush coastal greens. This inspired a restrained yet tactile color palette, with warm travertine floors and timber ceilings adding a sense of comfort and connection to the natural environment.
Material Stories
Every material choice tells a story. The concrete benchtop, with its soft chalky feel, reminds Christine of strolling along the boardwalk between Manly and Fairy Bower. The black timber kitchen, an unexpected element, adds depth and contrast, disrupting the typical coastal narrative. A mirrored splashback brings the ocean's glimmers indoors, while hand-sponged render on the walls echoes the softness of the sand, creating a sense of quiet movement.
A Journey of Discovery
The furniture selection was a labor of love, with custom designs crafted by local artisans like woodworker Jarrah Wells, and curated vintage finds. "It was like a treasure hunt," Christine explains. "Each piece had to feel like it belonged on this journey."
